NAME OF I-D

http://www.ietf.org./internet-drafts/draft-anderson-gsmp-swpart-mib-00.txt

SUMMARY

The goal of this memo is to define a MIB that describes how a single
physical
network element is to be partitioned into multiple virtual network elements.

However, at the moment, the MIB focuses primarily on partitioning of
switches
prior to the establishment of GSMP adjacency. The MIB allows physical
switch
resources to be allocated to the virtual switches that have been created.
The MIB also allows some configuration of how control protocols may attach
to
each virtual switch and monitoring of which controllers have connected to
which partitions.

WHERE DOES IT FIT IN THE PICTURE OF THE SUB-IP WORK

This MIB falls into the "control" block.

WHY IS IT TARGETED AT THIS WG

This memo is targeted at the GSMP WG. GSMP supports the use of switch
partitions via a partition identifier but thus far the GSMP WG has not
defined a mechanism for creating switch partitions out of a physical
switch.

JUSTIFICATION

The MIB defined in this memo is a potential solution to some of the
partitioning requirements currently being considered as part of the
GSMP charter. Furthermore, this MIB is needed for operators wishing
to partition physical resources and outsource GSMP control to the
leasees of those partitions.
