Unfortunately there is also a middle ground. Even in a market where the
customer owns/manages the CPE (like here in the .au ADSL market), it is
in the SP's interest to provide a level of CPE support, to make sure
the customer can use the services that the SP is selling.
Recommended defaults that make supporting customer owned CPE easy, or
even better, avoidable, have quite a lot of value to SPs. Their
helpdesks are pure cost to them
