RE: COPS for UMTS

Title: RE: COPS for UMTS
I have seen that document. From that, it is not clear to me if
- Your are gonna do just COPS, which I think means no PIB
- You are also gonna do COPS-PR, which I think means a PIB

There is talk about using both RSVP and Diffserv for end-to-end QoS
so when I see Diffserv, then I suspect COPS-PR, but that is not clear.

Also... I thought that there was no final decision yet that COPS was
going to be the interface... the doc has not yet been approved, has it?
Sorry for not understanding the details of the process in 3GPP.

Bert,

Please consult www.3gpp.org. The details are in specification TS23.207. Basically, 3GPP has decided to use COPS for the interface
between the PEP located in the GGSN (edge router) and the PCF (PDP).

That's why we came up with: " COPS for UTMS" for the time being. More work is to be done to clearly define the requirements before
we can move forward. 3GPP is still in the early stages for this work...IANA is still a distant worry right now ;-)

So can someone explain to me what the COPS-UMTS-Client Type is that is being
discussed in 3GPP ? May I assume they are aware that they must follow IANA
guidelines to obtain assignments for such Client Types?

I concur with Louis. The PDP context signaling is UMTS specific, its not an IETF signaling protocol, hence IETF cannot standardize any such client type.

    Apostolis,

There is no COPS-UMTS draft effort in the IETF. I don't beleive the IETF should define a UMTS specific
    COPS client.

    cheers,

      Hi all,

I was looking for a COPS client for UMTS and I'm wondering if there's currently a draft under way. Anyone knows?

      Thank you,
      Apostolis
