The term "protocol independent" MIB is potentially confusing. A better
term would be somethink like "IP version independent" MIBs. The idea
here is to design MIBs such that they work with IPv4 and IPv6. The way
to achieve this is to use the definitions in RFC 2851 or the revised
definitions in <draft-ietf-ops-rfc2851-update-04.txt> (which will
hopefully replace RFC 2851 in the not too far future).
