That would most definitely explain it.

Is this documented anywhere? I haven't seen any info RE this  
previously..

I guess the problem now is people with browsers that can't do IPv6  
literal addresses, do they throw an error if there are images in a  
page with those in the URL?
I guess it's possible to test what browser it is in javascript though.
