CCAMP PPVPN draft-tsenevir-8021qbgp-00.txt

NAME of I-D

SUMMARY:

This I-D present a method to distribute 802.1Q VLAN information across
Autonomous Systems using BGP-4. The solution provided here allows to learn
VLAN information across Autonomous Systems. The VLAN information and end
point discovery presented here is especially useful in providing end-to-end
Virtual LAN Services across Autonomous Systems.

WHERE DOES IT FIT IN THE PICTURE OF THE SUB-IP WORK

CCAMP/PPVPN

WHY IS IT TARGETED AT THIS WG

CCAMP charter specifies "Define how the properties of network resources
gathered by the measurement protocol can be distributed in existing routing
protocols, such as OSPF and IS-IS". The ID discussed here presents use of
BGP-MP extensions to distribute customers VLAN information. PPVPN charter
include "The working group will consider inter-AS (SP) VPN interconnects so
that VPNs are able to span multiple ASs (SPs)". The methods presented in
this document distribute required information to construct Layer 2 VPN
spanning multiple Service Provider boundaries. In that way the work in this
ID helps Sub-IP applications (PPVPN). Hence it belongs to either CCAMP or
PPVPN.

JUSTIFICATION

Layer 2 VPN services are gaining popularity in emerging metro services
infrastructure. Without the methods presented in this document, Layer 2
NBVPN providers are required to configure VPN service points manually. In
large-scale deployments such manual configurations are administratively
prohibitive. Methods presented here helps Larger scale Layer 2 NBVPN
deployments that span multiple AS boundaries.
