I find it interesting to note that my mail client (netscape messenger 4.7)
treated the string above as a URL up until the c-squiggle (forgive my
ignorance of what the character is called) but had no problems interpreting
the URLs on the .NU page referenced.

I can understand why ISP customer support groups are terrified of these
discussions... :-).
