SMIng summary from the 53rd IETF:

The SMIng WG met for 2 hours at the 53rd IETF. Overall, this was a very
productive meeting. Andy Bierman led a discussion of his updated SMI-DS
proposal, one of four proposals for SMIng originally provided to the working
group during the proposal submission process. Currently, the SMIv3 proposal
is being withdrawn in favor of SMI-DS and the authors of an ASN.1 proposal
have been silent. Unfortunately the author's of the NMRG SMIng proposal were
absent this meeting. Several questions for WG consensus were addressed at
the meeting and will be readdressed on the mailing list. During the meeting,
the WG members attending were unanimous in support of the nested (N-levels
of nesting) data structure representation and hierarchical oid naming scheme
of SMI-DS. The syntax issue remains unresolved while the WG attends to more
pressing issues, in the meantime, the consensus of the room was that a SMIv2
consistent syntax should be used for the current proposals... The other
widely supported syntax that WG attendees suggested is an XML-based syntax,
but there was no consensus to change the proposals to XML at this time.
