I find these responses interesting. As a vendor of networking equipment and management applications, I found the current draft focused too much on the large networks and not enough on small to medium networks. I wonder if we're categorizing networks in the same manner.

I find the draft oriented toward service provider networks, where provisioning of routers using in-house scripts written by knowledgeable administrators is prevalent, rather than toward small to medium enterprise networks, where the use of SNMP and web-based tools are used to make configuration of large numbers of devices easier for less skilled operators.

There seems to be an assumption that network size and the skill level of the operators go hand-in-hand. I suspect that may be a bad assumption.

Is there a correlation between the skills of the operators and
1) the size of the network? or
2) the centralization/distribution of the managed nodes? or
3) the 'delegation of responsibilities' philosophy of the companies involved? or
4) the skill levels available in the regions where the company's facilities are located? or
5) the number of core routers versus access edge switch/routers in the network? or
6) the wide deployment of Cisco devices coupled with the wide availability of Cisco-CLI training?

I suspect the use of CLI versus SNMP and web-based solutions depends on combinations of these factors. Of course the availability of tweakable knobs in the CLI versus other interfaces is the single most important factor for configuration.
