Just "asynchronous notification" then (to avoid the persistence or 
failure
connotations)?  I must admit that's all I had in mind (and we need to
fill the void with some term once "trap" and "alarm" are removed).

I'm not sure I see why "trap" is inappropriate in an SNMP context.
