Hi All,
I wanted to ask a few questions and make a few comments on
draft-lear-config-issues-00.txt.
I found the discussion on device-initiated and management-initiated
modes
useful, and it was interesting to see which modes are popular with
which
audiences. Part of the solution (for the cases that have a solution)
would seem
to be a simple activation message combined with a protocol that would
function
properly when initiated by either end.
Could the activation message be a TCP SYN?
That would be particularly simple ... but then it leaves the burden of
the
management functions with the same machine that sends the activation
message (assuming you keep the TCP connection). Is it preferable
to send activation messages from a single machine, but load balance the
management operations across a distributed set of machines? Or is the
main
reason for the "activate and pull" style of management simply due to
asymmetry
in the management protocol?
What are the issues around efficiently representing alarms in XML? Is
it inefficient to use SOAP over HTTP to deliver alarms?
Why do you need SOAP for alarms?
Alarms could continue to be delivered by SNMP traps, but there are
probably
advantages to reliable delivery of alarms. It's questionable whether
we should
expect XML encoded data to fit within a single UDP packet. When a large
number of nodes fail, it's easier for a management server to handle a
flood of
UDP based alarms, but is this an important use case?
I believe I misunderstood the following reference initially:
"Clearly we want to retain this work
as we move forward. Numerous efforts have provided translations
between SMIv2 MIBs and XML Schema Definitions (XSDs).[17]"
17 Thompson, H., Beech, D., Maloney, M., Mendelsohn, N., ed., "XML
Schema Part 1: Structures", W3C Recommendation, May 2001.
So [17] is cited for XML Schemas in general ... Could we also gather
references
specifically on SMIv2 and XML Schema translation?
(Note that bibliography entries [4] and [16] refer to the same internet
draft.)
