I think we're agreeing.  In an ideal world, I'd like:
    - a protocol to shovel this stuff around, hopefully
      fairly content agnostic (though instance names would
      probably need to leak out)
    - a standardized metaschema that plays nicely over this
      protocol, but the protocol should also work with
      proprietary content.
    - a standardized mapping for smi(ng) defined information
      onto the standardized metaschema
