I don't think anyone will see "THE standard interface that supports
all or most management functions for IP equipment" during my lifetime.
I think SNMP will *not* go away. I don't know how COPS/COPS-PR will
fare. There are other things also used today -- I kind of doubt that all
of them would go away in future.
Why can't XML took same approach:
craft a common DDL (schema template, i.e. SMI), a common protocol
(messaging, transport), then writing different data model (schema) for
different things (config, trap, PM) as an ongoing continue work.
One might eventually have a broader XML base than is being
discussed here,
but one needs to start with the smaller, clearly focused work first,
IMHO,
-- and avoid having a WG that has so much work to do that it doesn't
deliver
anything.
