CCAMP WG: draft-design-team-gmpls-recovery-terminology-00.txt

Summary for Sub-IP Area
-----------------------

Name: draft-design-team-gmpls-recovery-terminology-00.txt

1. Summary

This document defines a common terminology for GMPLS based
recovery mechanisms (i.e. protection and restoration) that
are under consideration by the CCAMP Working Group.

2. Where does it fit in the Picture of the Sub-IP Work

This work fits perfectly in the CCAMP box

3. Why is it Targeted at this WG

This draft is targeted at the CCAMP because GMPLS protection and
restoration of switched LSPs is within the scope of the CCAMP WG.

4. Justification

Protection and restoration of switched LSPs under tight time
constraints is a challenging problem. This is particularly
relevant to optical networks that consist of TDM and/or (all-)
optical (photonic) cross-connects referred to as GMPLS nodes
(or simply nodes) connected in a general network topology.

This document focuses on the terminology for the recovery (i.e.
protection and restoration) of LSPs controlled by a GMPLS control
plane. It focuses on end-to-end, segment and span (i.e. link)
LSP recovery.

The terminology proposed in this document is also intended to
be independent of the underlying transport technologies; while
terminology for control plane recovery is not in the scope of
this document.
