MPLS: draft-hummel-mpls-hierarchical-lsp-00.txt

NAME OF I-D:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-hummel-mpls-hierarchical-lsp-00.txt

SUMMARY

This document tries to initiate a comprehensive work item on standardizing the
hierarchical LSP of level m being a label-switched sequence of already existing
sub H-LSPs.
Motivation: Eliminating the n-square problem once and forever;
provide finally an mpls-Control Signalling which matches the label stack paradigma.

WHERE DOES IT FIT IN THE PICTURE OF THE SUB-IP WORK

The presented ID first of all fits into mpls WG, where the NON-hierarchical LSP
had been defined so far.

WHY IS IT TARGETED AT THIS WG

The biggest part of the envisioned work item will be the signalling for
establishing the H-LSP which is a main stream mpls topic.

The draft also mentions routing aspects and application aspects, which means
follow-up work in idr, ospf, ppvpn.

JUSTIFICATION

The full blown label stack insinuates the existence of LSPs which are concatenated by label-switching technique,
in the same way as are the individual hops within each (elementary) LSP.
However the respective control signalling for establishing such (hierarchical) LSPs is still missing.

This work is overdue as to match the potentials of the label stack paradigma.
Benefits:
The n-square problem will be eliminated once and forever. The signalled establishment of scalable hierarchical networks
on top of scalable hierarchical networks will be enabled.
