Subject: IPO WG <draft-many-carrier-framework-uni-00.txt>
NAME OF I-D:
http://search.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-many-carrier-framework-uni-00.txt
SUMMARY
This contribution describes a carriers optical services framework
and associated requirements for the User-Network Interface (UNI). It
is intended to provide carrier specific service requirements for the
automatic switched optical networks to guide the on-going efforts in
developing the standard UNI and other interfaces to the optical layer
control plane. The objective is to define the optical networking and
service functions as service building blocks that will enable the
carriers to mix and match them to build their own valued optical network
services. This contribution also provides requirements for the optical
control and management plane of the optical switched network. In this
contribution, we focused on topics of particular interest or concern
to the carrier community. This is a work-in-progress document and is
expected to evolve in near term as new requirements are identified
and further studied.

WHY IS IT TARGETED AT THIS WG
This contribution address the issues related to the following IPO WG
work items:
- Document the use of existing framing methods for IP over optical
dataplane and control channels, and as necessary specify additional
framing methods.
- Identify and document the characteristics of the optical transport
network that are important for selecting paths for optical channels,
setting-up optical channels, and tearing-down optical channels.
This contribution documents the generic services framework over
an optical transport network (OTN) for the IP layer and others,
and provides functional requirements for enabling optical layer
services. Based on the last WG proposal favored by majority,
this document will be consolidated with
draft-ishimatsu-ipo-lightpath-scrty-00.txt
into an IPO WG document, which address the security issues related to
the optical layer services.
In addition, some of the requirements in draft-freeland-octrl-cons-01.txt
can also be incorporated into the document.
JUSTIFICATION
In order to define the IP over Optical (IPO) technology, it is important
to understand the optical layer service requirements as well as the
enabling optical networking functions, which combined can be used
to create optical layer service for the IP layer and other client
layers. This I-D document address exactly the issues from carrier's
perspective.
