PPVPN draft-parent-obgp-01.txt

NAME OF I-D:

  http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-parent-obgp-01.txt

SUMMARY

This work proposes extensions to BGP for lightpath provisioning,
called OBGP. It can be accomplished in both intra-AS and inter-AS, but
the primary focus is on inter-AS. OBGP is similar to BGP vpns but is
done on the optical layer.

This document describes how sites can advertise through BGP the
availability of the optical lightpath to their site. This optical
topology available in BGP can then be used to communicate the
lightpath establishement to the OXC sites on the path. Many signaling
protocols can be used for the lightpath establishment. This document
provides a framework which instantiate the signaling protocol, like
GMPLS (RSVP, CR-LDP) or inside BGP. Signaling in BGP is discussed as
well as a redistribution mechanism to the other signaling protocols is
specified.

Seems to fit in PPVPN. Although the approach taken is not limited to
provider-provider scope, but is seen as enabling customer-customer
lightpath management.

WHY IS IT TARGETED AT THIS WG

PPVPN charter states: "The working group will consider inter-AS (SP)
VPN interconnects so that VPNs are able to span multiple ASs (SPs)."

The current draft uses BGP to advertise the optical topology and to
signal the establishment of optical lightpaths. The scope is inter-AS,
and the lightpaths are similar to VPNs.

JUSTIFICATION

Very limited work was done or is being done on inter-AS lightpath
provisioning. The current draft documents a way to achieve this goal
using extensions available in BGP.

More work needs to be done, specially around the requirements on
inter-AS lightpath provisioning. This will bring the current work more
in line to what the WG is concentrating on.
