SUMMARY:

This I-D discuss framework, issues and solutions for Network Based Layer 2
Virtual Private Networks. Different Layer 2 NBVPN models are discussed.
Strength and weaknesses of each model against customer requirements are
analyzed. Layer 2 NBVPN models presented covers; point-to-point,
point-to-multi-point, multi-point-to-multi-point and hierarchical models.

WHERE DOES IT FIT IN THE PICTURE OF THE SUB-IP WORK

The ID presented fits in to the PPVPN WG. 

WHY IS IT TARGETED AT THIS WG

PPVPN charter include producing a framework and requirement document to
cover Provider Provisioned VPN. Hence  Layer 2 NBVPN are within the broad
scope of  PPVPN charter.  .


JUSTIFICATION

Increasing number of service providers are offering Ethernet services to
customers. In the core of the network IP or Sub-IP technologies are used.
Ethernet services provided to customers are VPN service having multi-points
of service access (as opposed to point-to-point).

The PPVPN is considering  inclusion of new work items  covering the
development of  framework and requirements for  Network Based Layer 2 VPN
solutions. The milestones of this work item may include:

August 2001: Gathering design team

December 2001: Publish update version of framework and requirement documents
for Layer 2 NBVPN, and start discussion.

March 2001: Present updated version based on discussion.

June 2001: Present final version to IESG as possible Informational RFC.
