Subject: Re: What is CONTENT?
On ext: Practically speaking a lot of software keys off of the extension.
However, technically speaking it doesn't have to be meaningful -- i.e., an
extension of "sue" could mean "jpeg" if the content-type so indicated. We
could all agree to formalize this; however, I'm concerned that other content
issues (e.g., language) may affect the choice as well.
I think as the world of meta-data becomes more rich most of the meta-data
people will
want to "get at" will have to be stored someplace other than the domain
name or the
file extension. I think it would be wise to assume that, and plan for
that.
Language is a content issue I've alway been interested in. Not to toot(?)
our own
horn but I think the Gopher+ notion of multiple-views solved the problem
almost
perfectly. That solution solved "the language issue" in a very general way
which made
it very usefull.
