Ah, I see what you mean.  wl-highlight-message doesn't compute the
citation depth, as I thought it did, it uses a global algorithm that
gives a distinct face to each citation prefix.

Would anyone object if I changed the highlighting algorithm to choose
the face depending on the citation depth only?  The only issue I can
see is that it would give the same face to all Supercite-style citations
-- not a big deal now that Supercite is no longer as fashionable as it
used to be.
