Re: WG Last Call draft-ietf-sming-reqs-04.txt

David,

I looked at the new 04 draft and my general concerns previously posted
about general scope and direction remain unchanged. That sentiment was
nearly universally expressed on this mailing list prior to the
IETF. That said, I understand the preference for specific comments. Here
are a few. Perhaps a good way to see if these are valid concerns is to
see if we have working group consensus on these points.I will be on
vacation for about a week, so if others see value in these comments then
they can take them up.

4.1.3 Human Readability.
This requirement is not specific. Which people do you mean? And for
whome do you wish to solve a problem? I do not think this is a major
problem that merits they type of change implied.

4.1.4. Machine Readability
I think the motiviation for making easy to implement SMIng
parsers is misplaced. As stated previously this does not seem to be a
major issue.

4.1.5
This seems based again on the need to optimize for parsers. A non
problem in the companies that I am familiar with.

4.1.6
Is it still the working group consensus to align SPPI and SMI? At an
open area meeting (the ietf before the London IETF). I got the
impression from our ADs that these two would be allowed to grow
independently. This general goal seems counter to that position.

There are several others that fall into this category and are
obvious.

What I do like and think would be very useful are the
requirements .25, .28, .29, .30 and .31 and . 41. I also believe that
4.2.3 for Float Data Types will also be beneficial. I still believe that
it the working group were to focus on a subset such as this we would get
a lot of benefit without much additional cost. The requirements as
currently stated will have a large implementation and training cost and
will distract vendors from producing better management software and
confuse customers.

Thanks,
/jon
